These elite compilations are getting a little out of hand. I mean, first we were graced with Heroes: War Child, the outstanding Dark Was the Night, Starbuck’s grouping of Love Songs, Merge’s forthcoming Score!, and now it looks like Covered is all the craze. Here’s the skinny on Covered for the unfamiliar.

Covered, A Revolution of Sound has got some semi appropriate choices, but also features weird toss ups like Adam Sandler taking on Neil Young’s “Like A Hurricane” (could be amazing) and The Used demolishing “Burning Down The House” (Was their goal to induce vomiting?). Anyways, one of the major highlights has to be the Flaming Lips collaboration with Stardeath and White Dwarfs on a stellar cover of Madonna’s “Borderline”. I mean this thing is good. This is how you cover a song.

Popping off with enough minimal electronics to make even The Field happy, the two outfits progress into a gong banging frenzy of psychedelic pop mastery that could make you forget a little lady from the 80’s actually had anything to do with the track. This is basically a guide to how to do a successful cover. The Flaming lips were all, “Let’s cover a Madonna song, but make it sound like a sick Flaming Lips song.” Then they actually did it, and well, you can watch it here at amazon.

Yeah, after you’ve soaked that in, check out the whole Covered tracklist and get on with your normal, normal life…or start banging on gongs.
