There’s two things every music enthusiast can agree on. One, Craig Finn is a god. Two, Chuck Klosterman is a god. That’s why it’s so exciting to find out that Finn, aka the eccentric frontman for rock ‘n’ roll heroes The Hold Steady, is adapting Klosterman’s 2001 expose on glam metal, Fargo Rock City. Actually, it’s more than exciting, it’s a reason to hit the multiplex again — a rarity, these days.
According to the Risky Business blog via The Hollywood Reporter, “The 1980s-set screenplay will revolve around a group of high school seniors facing graduation as they try to find success with women and generally break out of their geeky cocoons.” Hmm, sounds excellent. Besides, a retro-throwback movie a la 1993’s Dazed and Confused or 1999’s Detroit Rock City never hurt anyone… plus, they’re always good for friend-infused movie nights down the road, too.
Finn, who will be sharing writing duties with Tom Ruprecht, a longtime writer on Late Show With David Letterman, already has lots to say regarding the project: “Seventeen or eighteen is the perfect age for characters in a movie like this, because it’s at that age that you have drivers licenses and a certain amount of independence, but you’re still young enough that you can totally make terrible decisions. And you’re still young enough that you can have a two-hour argument over whether Motley Crue would beat Guns ‘N Roses in a fight.”
Ruprecht’s been vocal, too.
“Heavy metal is kind of a common bond among a group of friends,” Ruprecht says. “It’s the language they speak. But this will also be a universal story of dorky kids trying to be cool.”
It’s doubtful anyone will disagree that these two are a match made in heaven for this film. Let’s just hope Klosterman’s cool with the final product. God knows how particular that guy can get.
