UNKLE is ready to follow up 2008’s End Titles… Stories for Film with an album heavy in buzzworthy collaborations. The London trip-hop outfit led by James Lavelle is noted for collabs (Thom Yorke, Josh Homme, Brian Eno), and the new album, Where Did the Night Fall, features some of their more interesting ones yet.
Per Exclaim, UNKLE teamed up with former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Mark Lanegan, as well as neo-psychedelic groups like Sleepy Sun and The Black Angels. Lavelle and co. are also bringing back Autolux for a second collaboration (the first was the trippy “Persons & Machinery” in 2007), and Clayhill vocalist Gavin Clark, who now appears on three UNKLE albums. If that isn’t enough, we’ll also be hearing from Katrina Ford, ELLE J, and Joel Cadbury.
As for the sound? According to an UNKLE press release: The album’s influences range from psychedelic rock to Afrobeat and employs live drums, strings and percussion from the Heritage Orchestra. All this, coupled with UNKLE’s trademark electronica is expertly woven and layered to build rich soundscapes. Sounds acceptable!
The album comes out May 11th on UNKLE’s Surrender All label. Go here to download “Natural Selection”, and see the track list below.
