Hot Hot Heat announces new label and album

Indie rockers Hot Hot Heat are back with what should be a hot hot sell: their first album in three years. On June 1st, the Canadian group will drop Future Breeds, their first record on new label Danger Bird Records, and their first to feature former Fake Shark Real Zombie bassist Parker Bossley.

Recorded in the band’s new Vancouver studio, Tugboat Place, Future Breeds was overseen by frontman Steve Bays and mixed by Limblifter frontman Ryan Dahle. The three year gap between this and their last record, Happiness Ltd., was due to the group’s decision to record the album first before shopping it to different labels. “I wanted whoever was going to sign us to sign us on our new sound rather than our old one,” explained Bays in an issued statement.

Well, Jeff Castelaz, co-founder/CEO of Dangerbird Records, was among those who was blown away by said new sound, noting, “when we heard the new record, we wanted them to be part of our gang. When we talked to them, and heard the determination and clarity of purpose in their voices, we had to have them.”

Hot Hot Heat would ultimately sign with the Los Angeles based label after just one meeting. “Dangerbird got our vibe right away,” noted Bays. “Because of the kind of record we were making, we realized early on that we needed to finish the entire record before looking for a home for it, if they ‘got it,’ then we could talk. Also, they’re also just really cool people and that’s huge to us because, at the end of the day, they are essentially inviting us to join their family. We are pretty thrilled.”

Both the album’s title track and “JKF’s LSD” have been posted on the band’s official website as video clips, and point in the new direction they’ve undertaken. According to Bays, “There’s a lot of weird ideas and time signatures. I don’t expect it to necessarily go over super well with everyone. But I expect that people that listen to a lot of music and are a bit more critical will get where we’re coming from. It’s a bunch of guys in a room with a bunch of fun toys.”

“Our goal was to make it a party album,” he siad. “But it’s a pretty complicated party album.”

Future Breeds will see release this summer. More info when it becomes available.
