Having recently finished up their Hazards of Love tour and a cool movie to boot, The Decemberists are back in the studio working on their sixth studio album. So, how does a band follow up much a massive success like Hazards of Love? Why, by adding special guests, of course!
Per a recent and rather subtle tweet (via P4k), frontman Colin Meloy revealed that none other than R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck has joined the group in the studio:”First official day of #6 practice; made Peter Buck play my fake-REM riffs and he didn’t seem perturbed. Nor litigious.” Now, that deserves a !.
In other Decemberists news, the band announced its only show so far for 2010: a benefit concert in Astoria, Oregon on April 30th with special guest Michael Hurley. The show is in support of Oregon-based artist, Jessica Schlief, who’s buried with medical bills and needs all the help she can get.
The tickets for the Liberty Theater performance cost either $35 or $75 for those who want a limited-edition silk-screened poster by Meloy’s wife, Carson Ellis. So if you’re in the area, it’s worth the price of admission for a good cause and a great show.
No word on when Meloy and co. plan to release their next full-length, but with only one planned performance scheduled for 2010 (so far) and members Jenny Conlee (vocals, accordian), Nate Query (bass, cello) and Chris Funk (vocals, bazouki, dobro, weissenborn) currently touring in support of their new side-project Black Prarie, we’re guessing it won’t be anytime soon.
