Brett Gurewitz and Mike Ness were always meant to be. Both were trailblazers in Southern Californias DIY punk scene back in the 80s, and their bands — Bad Religion and Social Distortion each have a place saved for them at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
So its only fitting that after 32 years on the scene, Social Distortion has signed with Gurewitzs own label — Epitaph.
On the bands website, Ness, 48, said the label has a natural understanding of Social Distortion, and that signing with the 30-year-old imprint felt like a good next step for us. Gurewitz, 48, who has played guitar in Bad Religion since its inception, shares the love.
My relationship with Mike goes way back, he said, Social Distortion have been a matchless voice in American rock and roll and I couldn’t be more thrilled to play a part in the next chapter for this great band.
That next chapter is Social Ds followup to 2004s Sex, Love, and Rock n Roll, which the band has been working on since March. Ness said the album (which is due this fall) reminds him very much of 1992s Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, adding that hes bringing elements of early New York ’70s punk.
You can get a taste of the album this summer when Social Distortion hits the road with Dan Sartain and San Francisco pop-punk outfit, The Action Design. The tour also includes a main stage appearance at Lollapalooza and an August 10th date with Wolfmother.
Tickets for select shows are now available on Ticketmaster.com.
