If you’re a longtime Gorillaz fan, one thing that irks you about its live show is the utter lack of Del the Ghost Rapper, a.k.a. Del the Funky Homosapien. With all the dozens of specials guests Damon Albarn has brought on stage, he can’t get something together with Del just one time to perform Gorillaz’ breakthrough debut single?
Well, Gorillaz performed “Clint Eastwood” this past week on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross (along with “On Melancholy Hill”), and still no Del, but Albarn recruited British grime rapper Tinie Tempah to perform a newly-written version of the hit (hat tip to gorillaz-news.livejournal.com). And as fun as it is to sing along with Del’s recorded vocals at a live show, this is an acceptable replacement.
The Tinie Tempah verses aren’t quite as good as the De La Soul/Bootie Brown version, which flowed appropriately with the track, but better than the Phi Life Cypher version. But the problem with all three versions is they just aren’t the same song. I’m still holding out hope for a San Francisco show with Del, but the existence of this version is making that look unlikely.
As for the rest of the performance, the band is good as usual — Clash members, orchestra, Albarn, and all. The orchestra livens “Clint Eastwood”, and Albarn is a beast on that melodica.
You’ll see at the end of the video a playful scuffle involving Gorillaz, host Jonathan Ross, and comedian Ross Noble. Check out the second video below for that explanation; Noble and Ross have themselves a Friday night fight as Albarn and Jamie Hewlett look on.
