As most of us know, James Murphy has a love/hate relationship with New York City. It’s his home as well as the place where he recently played LCD Soundsystem‘s first live performance in two years. Yet at the same time, Murphy isn’t afraid of poking fun at the Big Apple and its current culture and makeup, as exemplified by the LCD classic “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down”. So, perhaps it’s only appropriate that during the band’s recent run in New York, Murphy and Co. closed out their gigs by performing the aforementioned “New York, I Love You” and then segueing into a cover of the city’s new anthem — Jay-Z and Alicia Key’s “Empire State of Mind”.
As you can see in the video below (via Awl), the LCD’s cover isn’t much than a verse, but still proves to be a fascinating moment of both hilarity and cynicism, which of course is everything LCD Soundsystem is about. After all, who else could mock something one moment and celebrate it the next, all without losing a sense of energy, excitement, or emotion?
