Pavement will indeed reunite with original drummer for one-off

They don’t do much talking in the 209, but Pavement guitarist Spiral Stairs did some talking a month ago — some real hard talking. He implied the Stockton, CA band’s original drummer Gary Young would be on hand for its first-ever hometown performance. Today, Pavement’s label Matador confirmed Young will indeed be joining the band onstage in two weeks (via Pitchfork).

While it is fathomable Young could travel the short distance with his old bandmates to Berkeley the next day, all signs are pointing to this being a one-off reunion. Needless to say, this is pretty much the show to see — intimate venue, first hometown gig, an impressive opener in The Authorities, and now the guy behind the skins on Pavement’s brilliant debut Slanted and Enchanted. The Matablog warns that tickets will sell out, and even dares fans to fly in for the show.

Young lives in nearby Linden. The drummer, known for his off-kilter antics while with the band, left Pavement in 1993 after a tour and before the band released 1994’s classic Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.

Matador does not reveal what songs Young will play — will he replace Steve West for all Slanted tracks? Will he come out for only a few songs like Chuck Mosley did with Faith No More? Will we have a case of dual drummers, or perhaps a drummer duel?
