Rihanna to make film debut in Battleship

Given that Rihanna already showed her affinity for guns and tanks in her video for “Hard”, it should come as no surprise that she’s chosen a military movie for her debut on the big screen.

The thing that will make you scratch your head, however, is the subject the film’s based on. Battleship is currently slated for a 2012 release through Universal Studios. Yes, it’s the head-to-head board game, as in “You sank my battleship!”

(Dear movie studios, please start coming up with original ideas again. Thanks, Joe.)

When it comes to the story, there aren’t many details. All that’s known about the plot is that it revolves around a planet defending itself with air, land, and sea combat against a superior force.   So… t’s basically the board game but extended to two hours. Sounds… fun?

In terms of who’s involved with the film, Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Hancock) is slated to direct, with brothers Jon and Eric Hoeber writing the script. TV stars Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) will star as a naval officer and his brother, respectively.

We could make a joke here about battleships, bombs, and sinking, but let’s be honest: you already made that joke as soon as you read the headline. Until reporting for duty, catch Rihanna on tour now.
