Unlike most early morning barroom notions that end in broken bones or broken hearts, Peter Hook’s drunken idea to form an all-bass supergroup was worth telling friends and family about. So, the former New Order/Joy Division bassist quickly dropped the plan on some pretty talented friends, recruiting Andy Rourke (The Smiths) and Gary Mounfied (Stone Roses) to complete the rhythmic trio behind Freebass.
Using a rotating roster of singers, Freebass quickly recorded and digitally released the EP Two Worlds Collide, and full-length It’s a Beautiful Life. But like many supergroups, longevity may not have been of the highest concern. After staying stateside during the group’s summer European tour, and mysteriously vanishing from all promo photos, Rourke has officially announced he also won’t be joining Freebass for their upcoming American tour (via SlicingUpEyeballs.com). The announcement coming the same week Two World Collide is available on CD.
While no dates or the possibility of an alternate third touring bassist have been announced, we do know the roster now includes lead singer Gary Briggs (Haven). We’ll keep you updated as dates are announced, as it should be nice to finally see a former member of New Order, especially since Bad Lieutenant just can’t seem to make it to the States.
