Despite their iconic status, Depeche Mode‘s four original members haven’t worked together as a unit since 1981. Come this June, however, all that changes with the release of Remixes 2: 81-11, a 37-track collection that also features contributions from Dan the Automator, UNKLE, M83, and more (via the band’s official site).
As the title suggests, the collection follows a similar blueprint to its predecessor, 2004’s Remixes 81-04, and features reworkings of material spanning 1981’s Speak & Spell through 2009’s Sounds of the Universe. Beginning June 6th, Remixes 2: 81-11 will be available as a single CD (which features just 13 songs), a three-CD set, and on six vinyl LPs. However, only the latter two options will feature the contributions of ex-Depeche Mode members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder, who remixed “Behind the Wheel” and “In Chains”, respectively.
Both Clarke and Wilder have been quite busy since their respective departures from Depeche Mode. Clarke, who co-founded the band with Dave Gahan, Andy Fletcher, and Martin Gore in 1980, departed following their 1981 debut Speak & Spell after expressing dissatisfaction with the band’s direction. In the years that followed, Clarke formed the bands Yazoo, The Assembly, and Erasure. Wilder, who was hired as Clarke’s replacement in 1982, left the group in June 1995 due to dissatisfaction with “internal relations and working practices.” Since then, he has been hard at work with his Recoil project, touring as recently as last year.
Remixes 2: 81-11 is the first release to feature all four of Depeche Mode original members since Speak & Spell. It also marks the first time Clarke and Wilder have appeared together on a DM release.
