For a while, tribute albums appeared to be music’s favorite thing. Hell, even living artists were getting ’em. While that trend has since been replaced by film scores penned by notable electronic acts, there are still upcoming efforts honoring some of music’s all-time greats. The Rolling Stones recently paid tribute to Ian Stewart, and now comes word of a star-studded 19-track effort recognizing the achievements of rock and roll pioneer Buddy Holly.

Due for release June 28th via Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group, Rave On Buddy Holly features contributions from Paul McCartney, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Nick Lowe, Fionna Apple, The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, My Morning Jacket, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Florence and the Machine, Cee-Lo Green, She & Him, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, and Karen Elson.

According to the Pop & Hiss, the project was supervised by Randall Poster and promises to steer clear of the “reverent re-creations typically found on similar projects.” Explained Poster in an issued press release: “As the tracks from various contributors were gathered for the album, we seemed to be gathering pieces of a complex and original puzzle … that traces back to the roots of rock and roll and shapes so much of the music that followed.”
