Watch: Jeff Mangum plays with The Soap Scums

Fact: This fall, reclusive Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum will play a series of North American shows. It’s still hard to believe, even after typing it. What’s even harder to bite is actually seeing him live – in the flesh, so to speak. So, you could imagine where our jaws went when Merge Records pointed out today that the singer-songwriter recently teamed up with Elf Power’s Laura Carter and The Olivia Tremor Control’s Peter Erchick, John Fernandes, and Eric Harris to perform a surprise set under the moniker The Soap Scums as AUX Experimental Arts Festival in Athens, GA. Fact or fiction? Fact. Though, we’re still in a quasi state of disbelief ourselves, even after watching the corresponding video, which would make David Lynch’s Inland Empire seem quaint. This is the same guy who wrote “Two-Headed Boy”?
