Video: Kanye West recites poem for Martin Luther King Jr....when he was 12

It was reported today that 200,000 documents regarding the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. were recently made available online. Here’s one more for the books.

Yesterday, the internet received footage of Kanye West going in on some verses at Chicago’s Double Door from 1996. Let’s take it back 6 years earlier when a 12-year-old Kanye dedicated a poem to Martin Luther King Jr. entitled “His Name Is Love”. Any other day this would wind up being passed around through back channels, but it’s especially appropriate, and especially good for a 12-year-old. Great use of full-stops in his verse, and that hi-top fade is coming along nicely, Ye.

“My name is Kanye West, and my poem is, ‘His Name Is Love’.

A man who fought for freedom.
A man who fought for equality.
Don’t you worry [?] we’re too blind to see
What this man was fighting for:
So Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, and  Asians could put their foot in the door.
Yes, we know that this man is great.
    That’s why today we celebrate.
And everyone lifts their voice and sings
For a man who [?] freedom to ring.
Martin Luther King is who I’m speaking of
A man whose name means love.”
