As previously reported, Trent Reznor has penned the theme song for the latest game in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The game hits Best Buys and Game Stops everywhere in less than a month, but you don’t have to fork over $60 or get your ass kicked by a bunch of 12 year olds in online play to hear it.
As Pitchfork reports, the game’s soundtrack will be released separately via iTunes on November 13th. (It will also be included with the physical edition of the game.) The 40-track effort includes Reznor’s theme song as well as an original score by Jack Wall.
In an interview, Reznor described his contribution as an “aggressively sounding” piece of guitar, bass and drums-based rock, which plays off the game’s storyline. “There is a lot of reservation and angst and sense of loss and regret and anger bubbling under the surface,” he explained. “So it didn’t make sense to have a gung ho patriotic feeling kind of theme song. It has to feel weighty.” Below, you can sample the theme song in a behind-the-scenes video for the game.
Reznor fans should be particularly pleased on November 13th as that’s also the day Columbia Records will release How to destroy angels_’s An Omen EP.
