Lexington KY’s James Friley, mastermind of the one-man, dreamy piano-pop project Idiot Glee, all but created “post-doo-wop” with his cassingles series and 2011 debut, Paddywhack. The next evolution for Friley’s trademark sound comes with the release of a new EP, Life Without Jazz, out February 26th via his own Hop Hop label.

The five-song effort finds Friley “more adventurous and stylistically varied” after spending much of the last couple years living on a “steady diet of Fleetwood Mac, Roxy Music, Scott Walker, and Harry Nilsson.” Both the new approach and vintage influences inform the lead single, “Pinkwood”. While his homegrown aesthetic is intact courtesy of the warm hum of an organ, Friley’s voice has found new levels of emotional clarity and maturity in his search for the truest love.

Friley’s sophomore LP is due out later this year.
