New Music: Nerves Junior – “Goodnight Nobody” (CoS Premiere)

Louisville indie rock outfit Nerves Junior’s 2011 debut, As Bright As Your Night Light, was a transcendent collection of electro-leaning pop-rock that captured hearts and ears with its sincerity and frankness. However, following an exhaustive tour behind the LP, frontman Cory Wayne and guitarist Stuart Phelps left the band. Guitarist Christopher Snow and drummer Zachary O’Renick continued on, adding producer Brennon Staples and drummer Brey McCoy to the fold as O’Renick assumed vocal duties.

Though some bands might be inclined to focus on the pain of being ripped in half, Nerves Junior had other, more important topics to tackle on their forthcoming Craters EP, namely that of parenthood. The lead single “Goodnight Nobody” was written by O’Renick as a pseudo-lullaby to his daughter. But rather than gentle strings and rhymes about diamond rings, the track features hazy guitars, over-sized cymbal crashes, and a jagged bassline that instill an equal sense of calm and serenity.

“‘Goodnight Nobody’ is about wanting to tell my daughter about that transition every child must eventually face when growing up and dealing with the darkness of life,” O’Renick explains. “The idea came about when reading her Goodnight Moon and I wanted to tell her about some of the realities. Instead, I put it into song.”
