Sigur Rós announce plans for new album, preview a new song

Sigur Rós is in the middle of a Reddit AMA right now, answering questions about their new, perhaps untitled, eighth studio LP, which the band would like to see trend as #SR7 (no love for the Hlemmur OST I suppose).

Responding from a studio in Los Angeles, the Icelandic outfit stated that they are working on the album now, which will see a release sometime this year.

To go along with the news, they’re previewing a new track on their official site. It appears to be a studio rendition of “Brennisteinn”, which they initially debuted last year at a hometown gig in Iceland. By far it’s the heaviest, gnarliest thing they’ve issued since their debut album Von — and even then it doesn’t really compare. Listen to the preview below.

Here are some more updates to mentally note: Founding member and keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson has left the group, effectively making the band a trio. Of his departure, Jónsi Birgisson, Goggi Hólm, and Orri Dyrasson answered collectively, ”He said he spent half his life in the band and it was time to do something different.”

In related news, Sigur Rós will soon head out on an expansive world tour starting February 13th in Portugal. The full itinerary is below and tickets are available on their website.

Stay tuned for any further updates from their AMA, and get schooled on their back catalogue with Dissected: Sigur Rós
