Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Phil Jones (better known as Dog Bite) will release his debut solo album, Velvet Changes, on February 5th via Carpark Records.

After dropping out of the Savannah College of Art and Design, Jones hooked up with Washed Out’s Ernest Greene, playing keyboards in his live band behind 2011’s Within and Without. Life as a touring musician caused Jones to shift from an early, sample-driven recording process into utilizing more live instrumentation as he began work on his debut LP. Even as he found new ways to create his atmospheric epics, Jones still found inspiration from the likes of Caribou, The Roots, and the New Zealand psych-pop of Connan Mockasin.

Perhaps Jones’ greatest muse was the 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock. According to a press release, Jones imagined “storylines to explain the film’s key dilemma: a group of schoolgirls and their teacher set out for a picnic, only for a part of the group to disappear without an explanation.”

The subsequent 11-track album approaches that sense of mystery and emotional turmoil with poetic constructs romanticizing the ordeal (“Native America” features the line “I’m running with the clouds and taking everything”), framed by the shimmery jangle of dream-pop guitars and effects and methodical, evocative melodies.

While his solutions to the plot may be more abstract, Jones’ emotional constructs are alluring as they are cinematic in scope. Standout tracks include “Prettiest Pills”, “The Woods and the Fire”, and “Paper Lungs”.
