The Flaming Lips have set aside their love for Pink Floyd, King Crimson, TSA scares, world records, and musicians’ blood to issue their first proper studio album since 2009’s Embryonic. The Terror will reign supreme April 1st via Bella Union and Warner Bros (via Pitchfork) — that is, if it isn’t an elaborate April Fool’s day joke.

“Why would we make this music that is The Terror— this bleak, disturbing record…??” Wayne Coyne rhetorically asked himself in a press release. “I don’t really want to know the answer that I think is coming: that WE were hopeless, WE were disturbed and, I think, accepting that some things are hopeless… or letting hope in one area die so that hope can start to live in another?? Maybe this is the beginning of the answer.”

Self-produced alongside longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann, the nine-track album will be preceded by the non-album single “Sun Blows Up Today”, which will appear in a Super Bowl ad starring the Lips themselves on February 3rd. However, all pre-orders for The Terror on iTunes will receive an instant download of said track starting January 29th.
