As promised, James Blake previewed his forthcoming sophomore album, Overgrown, with the premiere of “Retrograde” on BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe earlier today. The track has made its rounds in many of his recent live shows, but the studio recording trims the external sounds and delivers pure, unadulterated Blake.
“We’re alone now, we’re alone now,” the soft-spoken singer pleads repeatedly under a warm shower of synths. It’s trademark stuff of Blake’s that’s far less somber and arguably more assured. He’s not the fractured lover anymore, but one that’s healed and looking to piece himself together again. That should be easy; after all, it’s not like anyone would ever turn away those piano notes after midnight.
Overgrown hits stores April 8th via Republic Records. In a couple of months, Blake will hit North America for dates surrounding his two Coachella appearances. Consult the full itinerary below.
