Top 10 MP3s of the Week (4/12)

cassettes Top 10 MP3s of the Week (4/12)

The top mp3s have gone through many incarnations since the beginning of Consequence of Sound in 2007. What used to be an exhaustive roundup of all the singles, remixes, covers, and undiscovered gems emailed to us any given week evolved into a compilation whittled down to our 10 favorite new songs. For 2013, we’re again changing up the format with the hope of giving our selections some added weight. We’re still posting about our 10 favorite songs, but they’ll be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who takes home #1 this week? You’ll have to click ‘Next’ to find out.

    10. Tiger Bell – “Slaughter’s Daughter”

“You better watch out and be nice / I’m a slaughter’s daughter,” howls Tiger Bell frontwoman Lovisa Thurfjell, behind an assault of power chords and cymbal crashes. One could lazily label ’em “riot grrl,” but this Swedish all-female quartet plays a brand of tenacious rock ‘n’ roll more reminiscent of The Donnas than Bratmobil: no feminist political messages, just pure, ass-kicking sass. “Slaughter’s Daughter” is the lead track off of Tiger Bell’s debut EP of the same name. -Jon Hadusek

    9. oOoOO feat. M.L. – “Stay Here”

Chris Dexter produces some eerie electronic music under the difficult to google moniker oOoOOO for a few years, but “Stay Here” marks the first taste of his proper debut LP. The twisted synth icicles, helicoptering bass wobbles, and eerie atmospherics are Dexter’s de rigueur, the bassy drop at the track’s end a woozy drift into a demented nightclub. M.L. adds vocals to bring some levity to Dexter’s world, though it’s definitely not all sunshine. “Why don’t you just stay here?” she coos. That siren call should lead right into June 24th’s Without Your Love, the oOoOOO debut doubling as the first release from Dexter’s new label, Nihjgt Feelings (dude doesn’t like Google). -Adam Kivel

    8. Killer Mike – “Villain”

    Injustice Gods Among Us

“Villain”, the latest cut from Killer Mike, comes via the soundtrack to upcoming superhero fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us. “I’m a villain, I’m a villain,” he repeats through a sinister deadpan – the kind only Killer Mike is capable of. Even the track’s prominent synths have a diabolical feel to ’em, perfect for soundtracking the Joker kicking some superhero ass. Plus, this’ll temporarily stave off our anticipation for the emcee’s upcoming collaborative album with EL-P. -Jon Hadusek

    7. Meat Wave – “Keep Smoking”

meatwave Top 10 MP3s of the Week (4/12)

Chicago trio Meat Wave have more than a delightfully disgusting band name going for them. Much, much more, in fact, including a newly released self-titled cassette through Let’s Pretend Records. The spy theme chord chug that opens the album on “Keep Smoking” provides the perfect entry point to their melodic punk, where swarming bass and knifepoint guitar slash and sting over an incessant rumble. For all of the sneering talk of a “swan song” and waiting for death (presumably caused by nicotine consumption), this is the kind of fist-pumping, melodic punk that makes you feel alive. -Adam Kivel
