“Musically, I wanted a song that was like Iggy Pops ‘Lust for Life.’ It changed a bitits not as hard-driving, its more Motown-y.”
That’s how Eleanor Friedberger describes “She’s a Mirror”, the second single off her highly-revealing sophomore LP, Personal Record. Where the track did end up landing is somewhere between 70s studio-rock (Ã la lead single “Stare at the Sun”) and a mid-’80s Hall & Oates jam, a little ditty where punchy guitars meet smooth R&B stylings for something as blissful as it is contemplative.
“Lyrically, thematically, its about obsession and its about seduction and I like how its very vague in terms of whose perspective is being told, where it is coming from,” she told Rookie. “At the end I kind of give it up and say ‘Shes me or a mirror, I dont know.’ I wanted to keep that ambiguous, about whether I am singing about myself or about another woman. Or if Im singing from a mans perspective about another woman, or about me. Or is it about several women? The last record I did it was so specific and detailed, with proper nouns and placesand its nice to have a record where you catch a glimpse of an artist and their world, but [this time] I wanted something where people could insert themselves into it.”
