blackjoelewis skulldiggin Listen to Black Joe Lewis new single, Skulldiggin

Austin blues rockers Black Joe Lewis will release their latest album, Electric Slave, on August 27th via Vagrant Records. The bulk of the album was produced at Austin’s Church House Studios by Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat Power, Modest Mouse), while John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, St. Vincent, Okkervil River) handled production on the album tracks “Skulldiggin”, “Dar Es Salaam”, and “My Blood Ain’t Runnin’ Right”.

In a statement, Joe Lewis himself described the album’s theme as a reaction to our shared obsession with modern technology. “Electric Slave is what people are today with their faces buried in their iPhones and the only way to hold a conversation is through text. The next step is to plug it in to your damned head. Nothing is up front anymore and people are de-socializing.”

The aforementioned “Skulldiggin” is a deafening first shot in the band’s war against technology-induced devolution. Over the mortar fire of crashing cymbals and the bombastic wail of a ferocious guitar, Lewis screams and shouts about mind control. And when his voice gets swallowed up by the feedback, it’s an intriguing extension of the anti-technology commentary.
