New Zealand’s French For Rabbits follow up their 2012 Claimed By The Sea EP with a mesmerizing new folk number called “Goat”. The duo describe it as a “lament on stubbornness and being sorry,” yet somehow it feels like much more than a mere apology. The way the song literally unfolds to bare its honesty, its regret, and everything in between comes off as rawness in its most intimate, reflective form. Brooke Singer’s voice, a smoky, cooling whisper, channels the kind of vulnerability most of us keep hidden deep down inside, and for a moment, it’s almost as though we’ve caught a glimpse of her soul. By the time the song’s run its nearly four-minute course, from meek coo to rousing cheer and back again, we’ve already forgiven and forgotten.
