R.I.P. Maxwell’s

     R.I.P. Maxwells

Since 1978, Hoboken, NJ’s Maxwell’s has been hosting acts from Sonic Youth to Titus Andronicus in a 200-capacity space at 1039 Washington Street. At the end of July, however, the legendary venue will cease operations.

“We were offered a renewal with rates that weren’t necessarily onerous,” the club’s c0-owner Todd Abramson told The Star-Ledger, “But after much thought, given the changing nature of Hoboken and the difficulties of trying to run a business in this town, we decided it was time.”

In addition to infamously poor city parking, Abramson points to the altered mindset of local clientele as a main cause for the closure. “The culture in Hoboken is driven by TV now,” he said. “A lot of the bars downtown are fighting with each other for who has the most giant TVs. That’s what Hoboken nightlife has become.”

As a full-circle sendoff for the venue, Abramson has invited back the first band to ever grace the stage: a, featuring members of The Bongos and Glenn Morrow. They will close things down July 31st.

As a rather fitting tribute, watch Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 1985 video for “Glory Days”, filmed on location at Maxwell’s.
