Along with Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag, and the newly-minted Drumgasm, drummer Janet Weiss has spent the last 20 years sporadically collaborating with ex-husband/former Elliott Smith collaborator Sam Coomes as Quasi. The band, which formerly included Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks bassist Joanna Bolme, last hooked up for 2010’s excellent American Gong. On October 1st, they’ll return with a 24-track (!) double album, Mole City, via Kill Rock Stars.
As a first taste, the duo has unveiled “You Can Stay But You Got to Go”, a garage-rock singalong comprised of crunchy guitars and Coomes’ haggard harmonies. Stream and/or download it below (via Pitchfork).
Quasi – “You Can Stay But You Got to Go”
The album will be available as a CD or LP, with various packages available including a t-shirt, a career-spanning zine, a personalized outgoing voicemail message from the band, and a limited test pressing. (Pre-order your copy here). Each order made directly through Kill Rock Stars comes with a CD-R featuring Quasi covers of “three of their favorite songs.” (Editor’s note: I personally can’t wait to hear the song titled “*”.)
