For the past six years, Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig has made it no secret he’s rather hyperliterate. An English graduate of New York’s Columbia University, the guy knows his way around words, which explains why this year’s Modern Vampires of the City hasn’t left our rotation — at all. Well, now the 29-year-old wordsmith has hit up The Talkhouse, where he’s gone ahead and reviewed Drake’s recent Top Star-earning album, Nothing Was the Same.
Of course, it’s not really a review. Koenig quickly tosses the album 10 stars, admits he “didn’t listen to the whole thing” yet contends that “Obviously, it’s good,” before segueing straight into an anecdotal story about hanging in New York with Panda Bear and being disappointed by his friend Hans from an unnamed Danish band. It’s pretty esoteric stuff — and there’s not enough juice this morning to get my sleep-deprived mind around it — but, nevertheless, it’s an intriguing piece of writing from one of music’s more intriguing personalities.
