Mike Doughty, the former frontman for Soul Coughing who now produces under the moniker UUL, has unveiled three previously collaborations with Elliott Smith. “The Record”, “Dog”, and “Burn” are all EDM-based numbers, with vocals by Smith and music by UUL.
As Pitchfork notes, the vocals were recorded during the late ’90s in Los Angeles, where Smith was working on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. The backing music was created shortly after Doughty found the original session tapes last November. It’s also worth mentioning that the lyrics of “The Record” would eventually become the basis for “Bottle Up and Explode!” from Smith’s 1998 album, XO.
According to Doughty, “Elliott did the vocals, acapella, specifically for me to slice-and-dice over beats”. He continued, “I didn’t seek permission to put this out. This is a collaboration Elliott and I began a long time ago, and this is the form we intended.” Listen to all three tracks below.
