Last fall, George Lewis, Jr., aka Twin Shadow, launched his “UNDER THE CVRS” series, delivering heartfelt renditions of songs from U2, Bruce Springsteen, Tori Amos, and 10cc. Today, he keeps his efforts going into the new year by tackling R&B quartet 112’s 1997 single “Cupid”.
While Lewis’ past efforts have involved some subtle shifts, he’s taken this song from the realm of extra methodical guitar ballad to slightly uptempo, almost danceable slice of synth-pop. It may not be the bread and butter of R&B purists, but the new vibe does add all sorts of subtext to highly theatrical lines like “Baby I’m so tired of the way you turn my words int deception and lies”.
