The writing was on the wall when Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks announced that 2014 would be their last year with The Allman Brothers Band. Now, in an interview with Relix magazine, founding member Gregg Allman has announced that the band that carries his name will retire from touring at the end of the year.
“This is it — this is the end of it,” Allman said. “45 years is enough and I want to do something else, anyway. Everyone has their own real good perspective bands.”
Allman was referring to Haynes’ solo work and gig with Gov’t Mule, while Trucks pulls double-duty with the Derek Trucks Band and his group with Susan Tedeschi, Tedeschi Trucks Band. For his part, Allman has the Gregg Allman Band, which recently added fellow ABB member Marc Quiñones.
Allman did, however, leave the door slightly ajar for future possibilities. “We may get together every five years and just do one play at a time,” he remarked. As of now, though, their annual run at New York’s Beacon Theatre, their 10th annual Wanee Festival, and a smattering of other gigs are all that’s left of The Allman Brothers Band’s touring legacy.
Speaking of their Beacon Theatre residency, the band will release a two-CD live album and DVD of their 1992 performance Play All Night: Live at the Beacon Theatre. The release is out February 18th, as is Live at Great Woods, a second concert DVD filmed in September 1991 at Massachusetts’ Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts, available as a whole for the first time ever.
