When not jamming alongside Jeff Tweedy or filming unique kitchen faucet commercials, Wilco drummer and Chicago-based composer Glenn Kotche works on his own solo music. He’s laid low since 2006’s Mobile but is poised to make his return with Adventureland, due out March 25th via Cantaloupe Music.
The inspiration for the LP came shortly after Kotche attended a Kronos Quartet concert in 2006. Setting out to compose music for a string quartet, the project eventually “morphed into a kaleidoscopic amusement ride of strings, gamelan, electronics, and Kotche’s vast arsenal of percussion instruments.”
“It’s a confluence of new territory that I’m trying to figure out and navigate,” he says in a press release. “And by approaching it as who I am — as a drummer, a percussionist — that’s where I do have an original voice, and I do have something to say.”
Amongst the seven movements on Adventureland is the playful pop of “The Traveling Turtle”, a composition that splices Kronos Quartet with the eighth blackbird ensemble called “Triple Fantasy”, and “Anomaly Mvt 2”, a titillating and percussion-heavy number, which you can stream below.
