Britain’s answer to the Grammys, affectionally called the BRIT Awards, took place Wednesday night at London’s O2 Arena. In addition to performances from Beyoncé, Arctic Monkeys, Pharrell, and a collaboration between Lorde and Disclosure, several awards were handed out.
Arctic Monkeys were among the big winners, earning Best British Group and British Album of the Year. Upon winning the latter, frontman Alex Turner gave the speech of the century:
“That rock and roll, eh? That rock and roll, it just won’t go away. It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swap. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands that acquiesce to some of its rules. But it’s always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that rock and roll, it seems like it’s faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it…”
“Invoice me for the microphone if you need to,” Turner added before dropping the mic.
David Bowie, meanwhile, won the award for Best British Male Artist. Kate Moss accepted the award on his behalf, wearing Bowie’s original Ziggy Stardust costume and reading a pre-written speech. Here it is below:
“In Japanese myth, the rabbits on my old costume that Kate’s wearing actually live on the moon, Kate comes from Venus and I’m from Mars. So that’s nice!!
I’m completely delighted to have a BRIT for being the best male. But I am, aren’t I Kate?
