Sharing a similar creative aesthetic and slightly nerdy worldview, Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper have become like brothers in the last year. The pair have already collaborated a few times, joining forces for Because the Internet’s “The Worst Guys” and Acid Rap’s “Favorite Song”. Last night, they reunited during Gambino’s “Deep Web” show at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre, and not only did they tear through their collaborative singles, they engaged in a little freestyle back-and-forth.

Joined by Gambino’s actual brother Steve G., the rappers went at it over some 10 minutes, going in over a bit of rickety piano and dense, thudding drums. With Gambino and Chance so evenly matched on the mic, it’s hard to pick a clear winner. Instead, each emcee demonstrated their unique approach to the art of freestyle: Gambino proved to be a bit more terse and brooding, before launching into a deluge off falsetto singing, and Chance did his best to confuse and bewilder the crowd with his maddening pace and oddball persona. Would it be too cheesy to say Chicago, and by extension anyone with decent Internet, were the real winners? Cause we totally were.
