Listen: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s new song “Coming Down” featuring Matt Berninger

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will self-release their fourth album, Only Run, on June 3rd. According to a press release, the follow-up to 2011’s Hysterical features frontman Alec Ounsworth as the album’s singular creative mastermind, as he rediscovers a “renewed sense of optimism.” (If you recall, multi-instrumentalist Robbie Guertin and bassist Tyler Sargent departed in July 2012, leaving only Ounsworth and drummer Sean Greenhalgh in a supporting role.)

Ounsworth said in a statement, “Lately, I’ve been assaulted by news, both distant and near, that suggests a certain sense of frustration. But Clap Your Hands Say Yeah — the entire concept of the band, the name itself — is about balancing optimism in the face of overwhelming odds.”

As our first taste of the album, CYHSY has shared “Coming Down”, which features The National’s own Matt Berninger. After delving into electro-pop with last year’s Little Moments EP, the band unveils something a little more rollicking, a ferocious and dissonant blend of blitzing synth-rock, fuzzy garage rock, and just a hint of U2-esque arena rock. Vocally, Ounsworth provides the pure emotion, wailing with great abandon, while Berninger brings things back to earth with his brooding baritone.
