Nashville singer-songwriter Torres has contributed a new song called “New Skin” for the latest installment of Weathervane Music’s Shaking Through web series. She’s not alone either, enlisting the help of special guests Sharon Van Etten, The War on Drugs’ own Adam Granduciel and Dave Hartley, and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists’ Chris Wilson.
The melding of such talent works especially well here on “New Skin”. Having channeled brooding indie rock on past releases — Torres on her 2013 self-titled debut, Van Etten on 2012’s Tramp — both women blend naturally, coming across as powerful, yet unafraid to be flawed, their smoky vocals merely a glimpse of the deep emotional fire from which they draw. Similarly, guitars cut and hiss with precision during the track’s pointed, sweeping bridge, a breakdown you might easily expect to hear wailing out of The War on Drugs or Ted Leo camp. Listen in below.
An alternate version of “New Skin” is expected to appear on Torres’ forthcoming new album. Below, watch a Shaking Through video about the recording of the song.
