Last week, Arcade Fire released the video for their latest Reflektor single “We Exist”. The clip starred Spider-Man Andrew Garfield as a man who struggled with his identity and wore woman’s clothing. Today, Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace called out Arcade Fire for their choice in lead actor.
Grace — whose own struggle with gender dysphoria was the focus of Against Me!’s most recent album Transgender Dysphoria Blues — aired her comments on Twitter, suggesting that the Canadian collective should have used an “actual Trans actor instead of Spider-Man”.
It’s hard to disagree with Grace; you’d think Arcade Fire would’ve wanted a more appropriate face to represent such a delicate topic. On the other hand, perhaps they chose Garfield hoping his “star power” would translate into better transgender dysphoria awareness?
