In between sessions for Foo Fighters’ new album, Dave Grohl has waxed a whole lot of nostalgia. Last month, he got back together with the surviving members of Nirvana for a pair of performances surrounding their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And last night, he returned home to Washington, DC to throw a birthday party for Go-Go legend Big Tony at the 9:30 Club.
Appearing as a surprise guest, Foo Fighters hit the D.C. club right around 11:30pm and proceeded to knock out a two-hour, 20-song set chock full of greatest hits and fan favorites. According to fan reports, at one point during the performance Grohl played guitar and took a Jaeger shot while standing on top of the bar. See the full setlist below.
Earlier in the evening, Grohl reunited with Peter Stahl, his former bandmate in pre-Nirvana band Scream, along with Bad Brains Darryl Jenifer and Dr. Know. They performed together under the moniker The Don’t Need It’s.
In a video released prior to last night’s concert, Grohl discussed the impact of Big Tony and his band Trouble Funk: “As a local kid growing up outside of Washington D.C. Trouble Funk were legends just as they are today. I opened up for Trouble Funk when I was maybe sixteen or seventeen years old and every time I have seen the band play it has inspired me to go home and discover music and play music and play as well as I can”.
