Rapper Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, has reportedly been denied entry into America. Earlier this month, Bey unexpectedly canceled scheduled performances in Washington, D.C., Chicago, and at Boston’s Together music festival. According to a statement issued by Together (via the Guardian), Bey was unable to perform due to “immigration / legal issues” that prevented him from returning to the country.
A native of Brooklyn, Bey has been living in Cape Town, South Africa since 2009. He’s long been criticial of the United States government, especially in regards to its use of torture. In June 2013, he demonstrated the force feeding procedure used on prisoners at Guantanamo Bay in a video for the Guardian.
Representatives for Bey did not immediately respond to our request for comment.
