Last week, U.K. indie rock outfit Alt-J announced the release of their sophomore album, This Is All Yours, due out September 22nd via Warner Music. Now, they’ve offered our first taste of the LP with lead single “Hunger of the Pine”, which was premiered today on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show.
Singer Joe Newman softly croons, as a bed of minimal, synth-y blips gradually bubbles and intensifies. Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of the track, however, is the sampling of Miley Cyrus’ “4×4”. Her line of “I’m a female rebel” is stuck on loop, as the track grooves and unfurls in much the same way most of Alt-J’s last album, An Awesome did so effortlessly. Listen in below (via NPR):
Keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamiliton discussed the song with NPR, saying it’s “composed entirely of new and spontaneous ideas that arose during writing sessions for the second album. It was written very quickly using some guitar chords and sounds being layered on Ableton, and seemed to signal a bit of a new sound for us. The lyrics mainly suggest the idea that missing someone — pining — can be a physical pain much like hunger.”
The band is also prepping a fall tour across the UK and North America. Consult their schedule here.
