Listen: Spider Bags’ new song “Japanese Vacation”

Chapel Hill punk outfit Spider Bags are gearing up to release their fourth studio album, Frozen Letter, on August 5th via Merge Records. Following the blistering lead single “Back with You Again in the World”, the band display a much more nuanced sound with their latest single, “Japanese Vacation”.

Spider Bags’ pop sensibilities are apparent right off the bat, with a jaunty, open-ended guitar that feels like an homage to Chuck Berry’s classic “Johnny B. Goode”. Even with the bright guitar tones and peppy drums, vocalist Dan McGee infuses a healthy dose of 21st century pessimism, spewing lines like, “Spider crawls across the wall/ Doesn’t mean a thing at all”. That mixture of upbeat grooves and unyielding gloominess make for a unique summer anthem, perfect for either cookouts or crying alone in your bedroom.
