Listen: The Gaslight Anthem’s new single “Rollin’ and Tumblin’”

The Gaslight Anthem are set to follow up 2012’s Handwritten with the release of their fifth studio album, Get Hurt, due out August 19th via Island Records. Frontman Brian Fallon has said the 11-track LP is “completely different than anything we had ever done before,” adding that the entire band was inspired by “poetry books and a lot of Bob Dylan”.Today, we get our first indication of where Gaslight’s headed sonically with the record’s lead single,  “Rollin’ and Tumblin’”.

If Handwritten represented a step toward classic rock, then “Rollin’ and Tumblin’” is a return to the more rollicking days of The ’59 Sound. Still, Fallon’s gravelly croon and the sweltering guitars are more blues-inspired than outright punk, like a more explosive and direct take on The Black Keys’ formula. Regardless of the influences, though, Gaslight is truly in their element when they’re free to just absolutely cut loose.
