Earlier this month, Iggy Azalea gave her opinion on Lorde’s involvement in Nirvana’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame reunion, telling Billboard that the 17-year-old singer wasn’t the “appropriate” choice of singers for the occasion. “Nothing against her, but I think when you’re doing a tribute to someone that’s dead, generally it should be the person’s peer,” Azalea added. “Lorde is not Kurt Cobain’s peer. No matter if she killed the performance or not, I just don’t think it’s appropriate.”
As Pitchfork points out, Lorde has since responded to Azalea’s comments in an interview with Melbourne’s Herald Sun. “I enjoyed it,” said Lorde of her participation. “I had a good time. That’s all that mattered.”
It’s worth noting that Azalea distanced herself from her comments almost immediatly after the Billboard interview was released. She also blamed the media for misinterpreting the quotes.
“I consider Lorde my very talented friend,” Azalea wrote on Twitter. “I find it ironic 2 girls tell the media they’re full of shit & weeks later supposedly I dislike her. My opinion on the makings of a touching musical tribute wasn’t meant as some back door way to take a dig at her or the performance she gave. Sorry if it came across that way, it’s not what I intended & I feel genuinely bad about it because I still think Lorde is an awesome chick. And I just don’t want to world thinking I don’t support the girls, because I do! Anyway I’m off to paint my kitchen! Lots of love.”
For her part, Lorde seemed to take Azalea’s side, telling Herald Sun, “I’ve been in a position where I’ve said something in an interview where I’ve thought: ‘Damn, I wish I could take that back.” She added, “I don’t know how [Azalea] is feeling about it. But anyone who’s doing well deserves respect, and I respect what she’s doing.”
