Watch: James Blake covers Bill Withers’ “Hope She’ll Be Happier”

While he’s known for his genre-bending remixes, a list that includes everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Destiny’s ChildJames Blake also has a few covers in his back pocket. In fact, his rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case Of You” was supposed to be included on this writer’s wedding playlist (ya know, before the DJ didn’t show up).

During his Sunday afternoon set at Governors Ball, Blake reworked soul singer Bill Withers’ 1971 single “Hope She’ll Be Happier”. Already a rather heart-wrenching number, Blake’s version is solemn and stirring, his distinct croon communicating the same mix of fragility and emotional fortitude. “Take them to church, James,” someone in the crowd shouted mid-way through the performance. Indeed.
