As previously reported, Montreal psych-rock ouft Elephant Stone will release their third album, Three Poisons, on August 26th via Hidden Pony Records. Already we’ve heard the title track and New-wave tinged follow-up, “Knock You From Yr Mountain”. Now, the band showcases their affinity for Buddhism with their latest track, “Child of Nature (Om Namah Shivaya)”.
Frontman Rishi Dhir said he wrote the song while trying to set music to Tibetan Book of the Dead, much like what John Lennon did for The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows”. Dhir added, “While reading it, a few passages stuck out for me: ‘oh, child of nature’, ‘loving in kindness, compassion in life’, ‘your nature in blue light’… basically, this song wrote itself,” Dhir said of the track. “I loved the imagery of one’s soul being guided through the unknown by words of love, strength, and determination.”
The song itself captures a transcendental feel to akin to The Beatles track, with both songs featuring whimsical sitars and ethereal vocal effects. Dhir’s soft-spoken vocals hover above the fray, spouting words of wisdom from the sacred text. All of this wistful atmosphere is brought down by a sludgy, rumbling electric guitar line in the post-chorus, lending the song a bit of a harder, more sinister edge.
