Listen: J Mascis’ new song “Wide Awake”, featuring Cat Power

Cat Power’s Chan Marshall has had a few different musical partners in the last several weeks. First, she teamed with Coldplay for the the title track to Zach Braff’s upcoming Wish I Was Here film. Then, earlier this month, Eddie Vedder invited her on stage in Portugal to drink a little wine and perform “Tonight You Belong To Me”. Now, Marshall’s teaming up with another alt rock icon, singing backup on J Mascis’ latest Tied To A Star single, “Wide Awake”.

The result is a dreamy, mostly acoustic ballad that plays to the blissful tonalities of both singers’ voices. Cat Power’s low, sultry croon diverges beautifully from Mascis’ more weathered and restrained drawl. Mascis’ guitar playing stays relatively simple, aside from the occasional fingerpicking flourish, keeping the focus on just how well their two voices blend together. Though heavily melancholic, there’s a tranquil quality to the track that makes it surprisingly comforting despite all the heaps of sorrow.
