Tweedy is new the collaborative project of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and his 18-year-old son and drummer Spencer. Together, on September 23rd, they’ll release their debut album Sukierae (pronounced sue-key-ray) via Wilco’s own dBpm Records.
Of the three album tracks we’ve heard thus far — “I’ll Sing It”, “Summer Noon”, and “Wait For Love” — each have been a gentle and earnest folk-rock ballad. Today, Tweedy expand upon their sonic repertoire with the more conceptual “Diamond Light – Part 1”.
The resulting track is folk-rock turned abstract experiment, with gentle, strummy instrumentation slowly warped into a deluge of brain-melting guitar screeching, bleak piano lines, and intermittent percussion. Luckily, Jeff Tweedy manages to keep things from spiraling completely into a bleary abyss with a truly humanizing vocal performance.
