Though RDGLDGRN are often classified as a hip-hop act, they’ve garnered quite a bit of buzz from some famous alt-rock mainstays. The trio’s mix of rap, reggae, and indie rock originally caught the ear ofDave Grohl, who took the band up on their offer to play drums on last year’s self-titled debut. Since then, they’ve gone on to share bills with 311 and Sublime With Rome and landed a spot at last summer’s Warped Tour. Now, they’re prepping a new, self-released EP that’s due out later this fall.
In anticipation, RDGLDGRN have shared “Turn”. The up-tempo track showcases the band’s knack for composing smooth, meandering tracks with a beach party vibe, as the slow-moving bass juxtaposes nicely with the shuffling drums and shimmering guitar embellishments. Ironically, the mellow track offers some criticism to those with a laid-back approach to life, as frontman GREEN rattles off lines like, “People are too chill now/I think we need to turn up”. It’s a blissful and reflective song that feels like the antithesis to summer bangers like “Turn Down For What?”.
