Listen: Sleep’s “The Clarity”, their first new song in 20 years

Despite reuniting in 2009, seminal stoner metal outfit Sleep haven’t recorded new music in 20 years. (Their last album, 2003’s excellent Dopesmoker, actually dates back to 1995/1996.) Today, as part of the 2014 installment of Adult Swim’s Singles Program, Sleep unveil their first original composition in some two decades with “The Clarity”.

The track itself is actually the first from the trio of bassist Al Cisneros, guitarist Matt Pike, and drummer Jason Roeder, who joined the band in 2010. Even if it’s technically a “new” band, they pick up right where Sleep left off: crafting dense, often murky metal, a colossal instrumental number that builds from staticky guitars and slow, lumbering drums into a sweltering cacophony of pulverizing metal. In an interview with NPR, Sleep offered contextual insight into the track:

NPR: I couldn’t help but notice “the” in this new song. Is “The Clarity” a lyrical follow-up to Dopesmoker?
Sleep: “The Clarity” is a lyrical follow-up to a lifetime of marijuana enjoyment.
